I switched back to Debian Squeeze but that didn’t resolve the problem.

If your webcam is not recognized by Skype you can try starting Skype with the previous version of the uvc driver (here is the Debian script-you may need to modify for Ubuntu):
#!/bin/shLD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so skypeOr, go to the Skype website and download the current version for your OS. Works great for me. I can even hot-plug the cam after Skype is running and the cam is recognized.

I had to buy a usb headset for Skype though because I wasn’t able to get Squeeze to work with my old fashioned sony plug headset mic. What I found is that if the headset is plugged in before I open Skype, Skype will recognize it. But if I try to plug the headset in after Skype is running Skype doesn’t see it.

Hopefully some clues that will help you.

Inside the Skype client, if you go into your options and look under “Video Devices” you should be able to pick your webcam from a drop down box and then press a test button to check if it’s working properly.

If that doesn’t work, open up a terminal and enter the following command:

gstreamer-properties

Open up the Video tab and under “Default Input” pick your webcam and try the above step again, hopefully that fixes your issue.

Known Ubuntu 10.04 issue – I can't use my mic with either skype or the ubuntu-included sound recorder. Rolled back to 9.10 and 9.04, same problem. Realtex ALC883 integrated sound card, Compaq SR1820nx. All volume and mixer settings are correct but still no mic. You'd think microphones are fairly basic, like wireless, but for some reason Ubuntu developers (or maybe it's pulse audio) decided to ignore us Skype and home studio users.
Odd though this was not an issue with 9.04 and an old Dell desktop.

Skype is now in the Ubuntu 10.04 repository. In the menu go to System > Administration > Software Sources. In Sofware Sources, select the tab Other Software and select (tick) http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu lucid partner . Close Software Sources. Now open Synaptic Package Manager through going System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manger. Press the Reload button at top left. Then search for Skype package, select and install.
