Howto: Install Firefox 3.6 on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala

firefox

Update: The mozilla team has made a new ppa that will upgrade firefox 3.5, I've added that ppa below.

Firefox 3.6 has just come out and for people that don't want to wait for Canonical to officially upgrade the default Firefox 3.5 install on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala follow these steps:

Step 1

Go to System->Administration->Software Sources and in the Software Source window navigate to the Other Sources tab.

Step 2

Click the Add button and copy and paste the either ppa into the dialogue box:

ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable (recommended)
OR
ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa

Then click Add Source and then Close it'll update your sources list.

Step 3

Open up a Terminal window under Applications->Accessories->Terminal, then run the following command:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install firefox-3.6 && sudo apt-get upgrade

It'll take a moment to download and install.

Once it's done you should now find when you run firefox it might prompt you with a dialog box asking to import your settings, procced as you like.

Note: If you installed the daily build ppa you'll see a new icon under Applications->Internet in your menu. Click the program called Namoroka Web Browser and there you have it, firefox 3.6!

nice post,i’ll try it. but why the name isn’t firefox?

That’s the code name, however I’ve just updated this post, because the firefox team released new ppa which will upgrade your current firefox 3.5 install to 3.6.

If you want to install it, I’d recommend first removing your daily build ppa and uninstalling firefox-3.6 with the following command:

      sudo apt-get remove firefox-3.6

Remember to remove the ppa from your software sources too (you can just uncheck the box if you want.

When you’ve done all that simple follow the tutorial again, it’ll work perfectly.

One could also use the ubuntuzilla script which works really well. Been using it for quite a while now on my Jaunty PC.

If you use the ubuntuzilla repository it will install the latest official mozilla release. I don’t think 64bit versions are available though.

The browser being called by its codename can cause some problems with some sites (notably that i recall Facebook’s IM).
